Happy 4th of July

This update is from Britney.
This has been a good week for Dad. He hasn't had any more fevers and his blood clots seem to have taken care of themselves. Today when I got there we went outside for the first time since his stroke. We sat outside all morning with our coffee. The temperature was perfect and we had the atrium outside under the trees all to ourselves. Dad read his horse magazine and then we worked on his writing. We also had our own speech therapy and Dad is doing quite well on his sounds for this week.

When we got back inside he started having some pretty bad pain in his right quad muscle which is quite possibly because of the electric stimulation they are using on his right arm and leg. Hopefully this means those large muscles are "waking up".

This week in physical therapy, besides the electric stimulation, he has been working on walking outside the parallel bars using his cane. He is also working on the NuStep machine. He exercises his left arm and leg to help send messages to his right arm and leg - it is like stepping while seated.

Mom and Grandma Bonham are spending the evening with him and going up to the roof to watch fireworks - if he stays awake.

Happy 4th of July.

Don,

My wife Brenda, formerly a Coburn, remembers you and Dale from Kansas Impact Team days. We will be praying for your recovery.

I also had a stroke but much less severe on June 9. My right side was affected and I had difficulty walking and feeding myself as I am very right handed. I spent 4 days in the hospital doing therapy. Then I had outpatient occupational and physical therapy for a few sessions and then was done. I praise God for such quick healing and spent the 4th of July running a rented skid-steer loader moving dirt around our construction site at our church. I am a bi-vocational pastor and was able to work half days at Caterpillar the last two weeks and will be going back full time on Monday.

I feel like there are some life lessons I am supposed to be learning from this experience but have not figured them all out yet.

Again, I am praying for your complete recovery as I can relate a little bit to what you are going through.

Don,

My wife Brenda, formerly a Coburn, remembers you and your brother Dale from the Kansas Impact Team days. We are happy to hear of your progress and will pray for a complete recovery. I am personally very thankful that the small stroke I had on June 9 was not severe and I will be able to work full time July 7th. I spent the 4th running a rented skid-steer loader moving dirt around on our Church construction project. I trust that God will heal you and you also can return to the things you enjoy doing.
A stroke is a bit of a wake-up call although I am not yet sure of everything I should have learned from the experience.
